Personalities of African Collecting in the Czech Lands in the Times of the Habsburg Monarchy (16th century–1918)

Hmotné doklady afrických kultur, uložené dnes především v Náprstkově muzeu a v Historickém muzeu, tedy ve dvou muzeích Národního muzea v Praze, jsou němými svědky dějin českého historického zájmu o Afriku a její civilizace. Jsou to dějiny poznávání vzdáleného kontinentu obyvateli země, která sama o sobě nebyla v historických dobách nositelem nějakých výrazných evropských výbojů anebo výzkumů. Poznávání Afriky a Afričanů tak bylo důsledkem či ozvěnou výbojů a výzkumů, které se odehrávaly v jiných částech Evropy. Dá se spíše hovořit o ozvucích vývoje evropského vidění a chápání Afričanů a událostí, které se odehrávaly na africkém kontinentě. Důležitou roli v jejich osudech sehrály tři, dnes již historické, instituce: Česká královská kancelář, Vlastenecké muzeum v Čechách (dnešní Národní muzeum v Praze) a České průmyslové muzeum (dnešní Náprstkovo muzeum).

The material evidence of African cultures, stored today mainly in the Náprstek Museum and the Historical Museum, two museums of the National Museum in Prague, are mute witnesses to the history of Czech historical interest in Africa and its civilizations. They are the history of the exploration of a distant continent by the inhabitants of a country which itself was not the bearer of any significant European outbursts or explorations in historical times. The discovery of Africa and Africans was thus a consequence of, or an echo of, the outbursts and explorations that took place in other parts of Europe. Rather, one can speak of echoes of the development of European visions and understandings of Africans and events that were taking place on the African continent. Three, now historic, institutions played an important role in their fate: the Czech Royal Office, the Patriotic Museum in Bohemia (today's National Museum in Prague) and the Czech Industrial Museum (today's Náprstek Museum).
