The publication introduces the numismatic public to 445 Italian medieval and early modern coins preserved in the numismatic collection of the National Museum. It is also the first volume of a new series entitled Collectio Numismatica Musei Nationalis, which is to be devoted primarily to the comprehensive sections of this museum's numismatic collection. Italian coins from the 9th-16th centuries are represented in the catalogue by two groups of numismatic material: One is the so-called Old Collection, containing more than 1,000 coins acquired shortly after the museum's founding in 1818 until the 1920s; the other contains items collected during the 20th century. The system of the old collection became the basis for the production of this catalogue of Italian coins, supplemented by large photographs of the coins in a pictorial appendix, a list of mint marks, indexes of the various mints, denominations, descriptions on the coins, etc. The introductory part of the publication gives a brief history of Italian coinage and the numismatic collection of the National Museum, which is the largest collection of its kind in the Czech Republic.
