Tajemná Núbie / Mysterious Nubia

Tajemná Núbie / Mysterious Nubia

The book Mysterious Nubia describes the Czech exploration of the historical region of Lower Nubia. The history of this exploration began approximately 200 years ago. In 1827, Anton Prokesch von Osten created a detailed map of Lower Nubia. Between 1841 and 1842, a group of Czech and Moravian noblemen visited the area, including Josef Vratislav of Mitrovice and Bedřich Všemír Berchtold. At the beginning of the 20th century, L. V. Holzmaister, an American millionaire of Czech origin, visited Nubia and Sudan. In the 1920s, the Lower Nubian temples were visited by travellers Bedřich Machulka and Richard Štorch. The culmination of Czech interest in this region was Czechoslovak participation in the UNESCO action to save the monuments of Lower Nubia, which was attended by the Czechoslovak Institute of Egyptology team and Egyptologist Jaroslav Černý. The famous Czech reporter Věra Št'ovíčková-Heroldová visited Lower Nubia shortly before the flooding.
