Come and see the prestigious exhibition of contemporary Czech architecture and see the 38 competition designs of the Czech national pavilion for the next EXPO world exhibition, which will be held in Osaka, Japan from April to October 2025.
The World EXPOs are the largest social, business and cultural events around the world. They are held once every five years, run for six months, and are frequently visited by tens of millions of people. They are a unique global platform where nations, the world‘s largest corporations and organisations come together to present their latest ideas and technological innovations to the public. They can be termed as a kind of non-sporting Olympic Games with a great potential to strengthen the national brand.
The upcoming EXPO is scheduled from April to October 2025 on the artificial island of Yumeshima. The island is located in the Japanese city of Osaka, in the Kansai region, which is home to more than 20 million people. For this reason, the organizers are expecting a high attendance of up to 30 million people. So far, 153 countries and 8 international organisations have signed up to participate. For Czechia, such an event represents a golden opportunity to introduce itself not only to the academic community but also to the general public to enhance the development of both trade and political relations with one of the world‘s strongest and most stable economies.
The pivotal place for us will be the Czech National Pavilion. The Japanese organisers have allocated Czechia a strategic area in the very centre of the event — at the intersection of the main boulevard and the seaside promenade. For more than twenty years the Czech national pavilions were built using the „Design & Build“ method, the Czech Commissioner General for EXPO 2025, Ondřej Soška, consulted with experts from many fields and decided to bring back the same approach that was used to build the pavilions in Brussels (1958), Montreal (1967) and Osaka (1970). Therefore, the architectural design was selected in an open and transparent one-stage competition, which followed the rules and recommendations of the Czech Chamber of Architects. The goal was to empower architects and other creatives to unleash their creative talents to showcase the best that our country has to offer in Japan today.
The architectural competition, which took place from December 2022 to March 2023, attracted 39 applicants. The jury evaluated 38 submitted designs that fulfilled the commissioning criteria. In addition to Czech architectural studios, applicants from Slovakia, the United Kingdom, Germany and Cyprus also participated. The Office of the Czech Commissioner General together with the competition organiser CCEA MOBA formed a highly professional and multidisciplinary jury to select the winning design of the Czech pavilion for EXPO 2025. On March 6th and 7th 2023, a seven-member jury reviewed the submissions and came to a consensus on three winning designs.
